Here is How I Spray Painted My Outdoor Patio Cushions
Yes! It’s true! You can spray paint your outdoor fabric patio cushions. Make your old cushions look new again, with Rustoleum Outdoor Fabric Spray Paint.
We had this outdoor furniture set that was in great shape aside from the cushions. The the cushions were faded and just discolored from years of being outside. I thought about replacing them, but that was going to get really pricey at about $75. per cushion. Then, I thought about recovering them. I quickly discarded that idea because I didn’t want to get into a sewing project. Then it came to me. PAINT!
My first worry with painting the cushions was whether or not the fabric would get all stiff and uncomfortable against skin. I had read about people using chalk paint or just regular old spray paint and this was always the one complaint. Well, I did a little investigating and found a solution!! Turns out that Rustoleum makes a spray that is made specifically for outdoor fabric! Which would be perfect for my patio cushions. Here is what I used to spray paint our out door patio cushions….
That’s when I hopped online an ordered a 6 pack of paint cans. I used Medium Gray, but they have a handful of choices and there were some great options. I will say it takes a few coats to cover the old color so I recommend choosing something somewhat similar to your existing cushion color. Otherwise, you’ll go through a lot of paint!

What do you need to spray paint your cushions?
For this project all you really need is:
A drop cloth to protect your driveway or garage floor
Rustoleum Outdoor Fabric Paint
A 2” Paint Brush (just for blending)
Prepping
There really isn’t any prep work involved. All you have to do is just make sure the cushions are dry. Set up a drop cloth and prop up an old cardboard box or something similar to lean the cushion up against it while you spray.

Then I just sprayed a thin layer over the whole cushion. I came back and did a second layer. Sometimes the paint would come out in splotchy patches that looked like they would drip. I just grabbed a paint brush and dragged the paint across the cushion to smooth and even out the paint.
Then what?
I let it dry for a few hours in the sun and that was it!
