Isn’t there just something about rocking chairs that brings you back to easy summer days of childhood? I just love them. My plan was to put this one on my front porch. I came across this old rocking chair for $10.00! I knew it would be the perfect thrift flip. This rocking chair just needed a makeover with a fresh coat of chalk paint.
Rocking Chair Makeover with Chalk Paint
I knew I didn’t want to get into a big huge project. Hours of sanding and priming was not something I was interested in for this. I just wanted something I could do in an afternoon.
This chair happened to be brown but with some random gold spray paint here and there. I knew I had a little prep work, but nothing too time consuming.

Light Sanding
The first thing I did was a very quick sanding with 150 grit sandpaper. Just to get the shine off and any peeling bits that were coming up on the seat of the chair and along the arms.
Clean the chair
After I lightly sanded the chair, I wiped down the entire chair with warm water and an old rag. Before I started, I wanted to make sure I got all of the dust from the sanding off.
Supplies
Next, I grabbed all the supplies I needed to paint my rocking chair. Below is a list of everything I used.
Dixie Bell Chalk Paint in Cotton
Dixie Bell Easy Peasy Spray on Wax
Dixie Bell Gator Hide (To seal your piece) or
Mist Water Bottle (I love this one!)
Let’s get painting
Start by putting your drop cloth down to protect your surface. Then I like to flip my chair upside down and paint the bottom of the chair first. I give it a fine mist with my handy mist bottle and then put a thin coat on all the underneath areas of the chair.
Let that dry and then add a second coat if needed. Once that dries, flip your chair over and paint the rest of the chair. Be patient with spindles. They are more time consuming. Be sure to use thin coats so you don’t get unsightly drips. Remember, it is important to not apply the paint to thick because you will over work the paint and it won’t look smooth and beautiful.
Finish off your chair
Rocking Chair After Makeover
Finally, you will want to apply a protective coat of spray wax or Gator Hide to seal and protect your chair. Once your chair is all cured and dry add some pillows and a cute throw, grab a glass of lemonade and have a seat in your fresh and beautiful rocking chair!
