This old fashioned apple butter recipe is wonderful for regular or crab apples. It’s simple and tastes incredible on toast, english muffins, sourdough bread or even to add to a charcuterie board.
Ingredients for Making Apple Butter:
8lbs apples (before coring and peeling
1 cup water
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1/2 cup maple syrup
2 lemons, juiced
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
Instructions for Making Old Fashioned Applebutter:
Peel and core and quarter apples.
Place in an 8 quart dutch oven..
Add water and lemon juice.
Bring to a boil and lower heat.
Cover and simmer for about 30 minutes. Stir periodically.
Once apples are soft, blend with an immersion blend (or food processor).
Add back into dutch oven if using food processor.
Add brown sugar, maple syrup, vanilla and spices.
Return to boil.
Simmer uncovered for 1.5 – 2 hours or until thickened.
Once cooled store in mason jars. Or any glass jar you have on hand.
Will keep in refrigerator for one month or freezer up to one year.
